sungei sembawang

there are many things that happen around us as we live out our hectic lives. some may say that these are but the insignificant, that they are superfluous to what living is about. how can one stop and smell the roses, even when the economy and the future seems so uncertain?
and yet. i proffer that perhaps it is not so bleak. there are things in life apart from the pursuit of monies - things that happen even while shenton marches on.
just a while ago, i found myself jogging at sungei sembawang park connector. it's a quiet little stretch nestled in the heart of my estate. a little oasis of sorts, it's a place where people gather to relax and recharge as the day winds down.
as usual, i'd have done my stretching at home before i head down, so once i get there i can start with the programme. i decided to do the 3.2 today, and heading right as i hit the track, i notice that apart from the usual suspects, some more abound. i wonder for awhile, and realise that we're in the midst of the december school holidays. no wonder then, that the families are out in force..
i run further down and on my left side is sungei sembawang. she's a concrete river of sorts, and if you divide the river in a north-south fashion, the northern side (towards the chinese temple) would be the bare side. there is a palpable lack of vegetation on the river side of the running track, but the other side of the track is flanked by a couple of schools and their respective football fields. there is a man working the industrial-sized lawn mower, and i always enjoyed watching the birds swoop in on the freshly mowed grass. i imagine that the earthworms will be churned up with the rumbling - a bird sized buffet of sorts.
the southern side of the river is another story tho - the undulating track provides more variety in running, and is anything but bare. the track is flanked on the river side by rather thick foliage, while the opposing side invariably bustles with activity. one could not help but notice the cacophony of delighted shrieks from kids running around the playground, as well as the laid back chatter of families setting up their barbecue pits. just last week, i ran past 2 active barbecue pits and omg but the smell of heated charcoal does nothing to aid my cause in weight loss.
running further down the southern end of the river and under the rail track which hangs overhead, i notice a trio of kids in their early teens perhaps, setting up their fishing lines. i never knew there were fishes of interest in this river, but what do i know? spotting movement in the water, i stopped to look over the fence and lo! a school of small fish in a feeding frenzy, clustering to feed on a small piece of bread dropped by an old man. alongside the fish, i spy a couple of tortoise swimming lazily in the water.
i smile to myself and run along. sniffing the air, i decide that the smell of the river is intéressant du jour. it smells like the sea. at low tide. it is at the same time not overly revolting but not quite unpleasant as well. i think people who stay near the sea probably have an idea what i'm talking about. the last time i came across this smell was a couple of years back, when i was jogging at this very track in the wee hours, 2~3am? when the moon was low and the tide corresponding so... it's funny how smells trigger nostalgia huh? :D
further down the track and i come across a family of 3, the kid looks like he's learning to ride a bike for the first time. i say that because he almost crashed into me.. ahaha.. it didn't happen tho, and i allow myself a smirk as he blurted out "sorry!" in the sheepishest of manners.
at the end of the track there are a couple of bicycles parked beside a bench, and on the bench sat a middle aged malay couple. the man was wearing a classic yellow/green diadora soccer jersey and a sarong, while the lady was decked out in a maroon and black spotted tudung, with a long sleeved top and track pants. i run to the end of the track and turn around, back towards my starting point as i pass the couple again. i spot them sharing a packet of rice and i think to myself - singapore is not so devoid of romance afterall?
900m later and i was at the end of my run. i have to admit tho, i've just only started this jogging regiment a week ago, and i'd be glad if i can keep this up for more than 2 months. only time will tell :)
